Changes to the handling of RAW&JPEG pairs in Photos 5 on macOS 10.15.4 Catalina
That is a nice new feature: Previously the command "Image > Use RAW as Original" has only been available in Edit mode. When we imported RAW&JPEG pairs, the default would be, that the JPEG has been used as the original, and to be able to edit the RAW original we had to open each of the pairs in EDIT mode, one after the other. In Photos 5 we can now simply select the thumbnails of all RAW&JPEG pairs at once and use the command "Image > Use RAW as original" and be done with it.
But there seems still to be a bug. If we managed to import a RAW file in a format, that is not supported in macOS 10.15, and include this RAW&JPEG pair in the selection for "Use RAW as Original", Photos will hang and we need to force-quit it. So be careful when trying to switch between Originals for a batch of photos at once and make sure, that no unsupported RAW file is included.
The Photos Help is still showing, that we have to go to the EDIT view to be able to switch between RAW & JPEG pairs. Use a RAW file as the original in Photos on Mac - Apple Support
- In the Photos app
on your Mac, double-click a photo to open it, then click Edit in the toolbar.
- Choose Image > Use RAW as Original.
