Change Year cover image in macOS Photos

In macOS Catalina, Photos automatically curates pictures by Year, Month, or Day. I love the Year view, but I don't always like the image that Photos picks as the 'cover'. Unfortunately Photos does not give users the option to change it (unlike for Albums, where you can change the 'key photo').

I found a workaround which is not very elegant, but works well enough for me.

In the Year view, I click on the year whose cover photo I want to change. That takes me down to the Month view. I click again, which takes me to the Day view. I click one more time, and I get to the photo I want to change. At this point I select 'Image - Delete 1 photo' to delete the photo from the library.

Photos automatically replaces the cover image with a new one from the same year. If I like it better, I keep this one, otherwise I delete it too, until Photos picks an image that I like.

The last step is going in the 'Recently Deleted' album, selecting the image(s) I just deleted, and selecting 'Recover'. The photos are restored in my library, but the cover image for the year remains the one I like.

I hope this helps!
