Thank you once again for trying to help. I have done all the things that you suggest but sad to say they do not solve my problem.

After a lot of trial and error I have discovered

  1. if I open an app with the magic pencil then I get a mini keyboard which will not expand, but if I open the same app with my finger then I get a full sized keyboard. I can shrink it of I use two fingers but it will not re-expand again.
  2. if I use my finger to place a cursor in an app then I get a full keyboard, but if I use the magic pencil then I get an unexpandable keyboard!
  3. if I want a full sized keyboard I must my fingers through out the process.

The “magic” is not so magical but I do like the precision of using a fine point! It just does not work quite as it is described by Apple. Or maybe my iPad is a dud?

Thanks again.

Your use of an Apple Pencil was not previously disclosed or suggested. As you observe, the behaviour of the Floating Keyboard differs when invoked from the Pencil - and as now described, is entirely consistent with that normally expected...

The Floating Keyboard can be freely repositioned, or expanded to full size, when using touch - but is of fixed size when invoked by the Pencil.

It certainly works with my iPad Pro models of iPad...

  1. Place two fingers on the floating keyboard.
  2. Spread your fingers apart to enlarge the keyboard back to full size.

If you continue to have difficulties expanding the keyboard, a forced-restart may resolve an isolated problem:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.
