Messages not working on Mac since upgrading to Sequoia 15.4

I updated to Mac OS 15.4 yesterday and suddenly messages won't sync with my iPhone, send, or receive messages properly. Some messages go through as text/sms instead of iMessages, most don't go through or come in at all. I thought I was able to solve the problem yesterday after repeatedly logging back into iCloud and rebooting my computer, but today the problem resurfaced.

I have already tried logging out of Messages, signing back into iCloud, disabling Private Relay, rebooting my computer, pressing "sync now", and verifying all the settings on my phone and iCloud account (including Text Message Forwarding) are correct. Nothing seems to fix it! I have looked for a Messages-specific software update in the App Store but there doesn't seem to be any.

Off-topic, I also had to disable notifications from the News app on my computer after installing the update yesterday because I am getting multiple notifications per second about news articles published last year.

I am having the same problem immediately following the upgrade. It is only allowing me to send SMS to my contacts from my computer and frequently they do not go through (failed delivery). I've checked every setting as discussed here. No issues from the iphone, but synching and sending is intermittent and limited to SMS from my computer.

Want to bump this. It's driving me nuts.

I tried syncing across my devices, enabling iCloud.

I can send messages on Mac, but it won't appear on iphone. None of the messages sent to me appear on mac.

I'm having the same issue. It's been intermittent prior to the update—one of the recommended fixes was making sure both of your devices were updated. Now, the messages will not send or update from my Mac on Sequoia 15.4 at all. This is driving me insane. I paid so much money for these devices and a HUGE part of the sell is the "Apple ecosystem". I can find threads from YEARS ago where people were having issues. HOW has this not been resolved???????

EDIT: now the app won't even open on my Mac. I keep getting "Force Quit: Application Not Responding".

I'm on 15.4.1 and am just now experiencing this issue. Tried everything everyone has mentioned in this thread, no change in state.

Mine now seems to be working intermittently but unpredictably. One day on, another day off completely even with no settings being updated. Seems like it must be a problem on Apple's servers.

It’s been roughly 2 weeks for me now. Spoke with 3 different Apple reps on the phone, no fix yet. The last thing we did was screen record the issue and sent it to their engineers. I am waiting for resolution

Hi Just called Apple and a great tech person--had me go to settings, iCloud, messages, and hit sync. This reset things and all is working perfectly now.

Same here on a 2019 MacBook Pro. I am disappointed to see this hasn't been resolved and has been a problem for a month now.

Same here.. in fact, I think it might actually be worse. The application just gets stuck now and gives the message "Application Not Responding"

This problem arrived when I upgraded to 15.4.1. I tried switching to text message forwarding to no avail and then back to Messages in iCloud. Nothing works. All RCS/SMS messages simply fail. This is SUPER annoying, I rely on this functionality.

This is really annoying. I have tried everything and it's still not working. I logged out and logged back into my Apple ID and it worked for all of 5 minutes before turning all my messages green again. Apple needs to get it together! And what's sad, there's no time frame on when this will be fixed. Where can I complain because I don't want to hear excuses. They need to fix this immediately.

PSA *if you are having the above issue and are not able to solve it - consider reaching out to Apple Support because if enough of us do the issue will be upgraded for engineers to review and hopefully issue a patch
