Apple iPad keeps changing my format for essays

I recently got a 10th generation apple ipad for college. I will type and format my essay perfectly on word and when I try to turn it in, it shows up as the wrong format and I can’t change it. My school needs us to use word to do everything and it looks good through word, it’s just when I submit it than look at it after the format is completely wrong and I don’t know what to do. Does anyone know how to change it ,I tried using google docs instead but its the same thing.
