Why does iMovie freeze after overdubbing and stop playing?

while overdubbing iMovie project , recording works ok , then after recording clip is finished, the app stalls out and goes into colour spinning wheel mode. unable to get out of it and when it does finally close, the play button and spacebar play functions don't work. I am only able to continue by going out to projects and restarting the video project . Any suggestions on a fix ?
