Does iMovie permanently remove clips from the original video on iPad Pro?

I have an old family video that is 2 hours long and includes several separate events and families. I'd like to copy some clips for specific events and or families and send them to them. I'm using my iPad Pro. I'm not totally familiar with iMovie but have it. if I grab some clips out of the long video, does it remove them permanently from the long video? Do you have any other free favorite video editing apps you use? Thanks!
