Rotate horizontal video to vertical without cropping

I have a video that I shot with a Nikon Zf in vertical format. I want to therefore rotate the video in FCP from horizontal to vertical without any cropping or duplicating of project. Can someone tell me a simple way to do this because each time I try to rotate the video becomes square because the video rotates but the ‘background frame’ remains horizontal ??

If your project is horizontal, but you want it to be vertical instead, you need to change the project, not just rotate the video in it.

Press Command-J to open the Project Inspector, then click the Modify button.

Change your project from whatever it is now (like 1080p) to Vertical, and choose the desired size (like, say, 1080x1920). Then you can rotate and adjust whatever clips you want.

If I misunderstood your question, please clarify; maybe adding some screenshots.

If you're in a vertical project, add your original clip and create a Compound Clip of it. Rotate and Scale the Compound Clip to fit.

If you make a Compound Clip of your horizontal clip in a horizontal project first, then switch to a vertical project: add the CC and Rotate it. You can then use the Spacial Conform parameter and set it to Fill to automatically scale the clip to size.

YMMV
