Will enabling Apple Music sync on my iPad affect my main music library on Mac mini?

My main music library is on an external disk connected to a Mac Mini and serves as the primary source of music distributed to various locations in my house. It consists of many Gigs of hi res downloads, CD rips and hi res recordings from my vinyl collection. I don't want anything messing with this library. (Of course, I do back this up regularly.)

I have an Apple Music subscription but I currently do not have syncing enabled on any of my devices because I'm afraid of what might happen to my library. If I were to enable syncing on one of my devices would all my other devices automatically sync, too, the next time I open Apple Music on them? I am hoping not, as I would like to download Apple Music files to my iPad and also make playlists from Apple Music there but, of course, I can only do this by turning on syncing on the iPad. However, if it's going to mess with my main library on the Mac Mini the next time I open Apple Music on it I will have to forgo this.
