Problem updating MacBook Air M1 from Sonoma 14.4.1 to Sequoia 15.5

When attempting to update, the following message appears:

“The software update could not be personalized. Please try again.”

“An error occurred while downloading the selected updates. Check your internet connection and try again.”

What I’ve tried:

• Installation via automatic update – error message appears.

• Tried using the installer file from disk – same error message.

• Installation in safe mode – same error message.

The internet is connected, the power cable is plugged in, and there is over 40GB of free space on the disk.

Please help – what could be causing this error and blocking the update?

Part 1 of 2

Ah, the old 256 GB SSD Drive Capacity Issue in 2025

This is akin to when Apple sold the tiny 128 GB Drive Capacity Drives back in the day

Looked great at the time

But as ones' needs increased and the demands by the user increased, the drive capacity was just not enough.

It’s good computer practice to keep at least 15% to 20% of the total drive capacity empty to avoid unintended consequences like what the computer is experiencing now.

This computer just tips in a 51.2 GB, just barely meeting to 20% threshold as empty and Useable Space

Part 2 of 2

Scanning the computer for Wifi issues be it hardware or other ?

To avoid a session of Q&A, Q&A  and Q&A

Download the Application Etrecheck ( External Link ) directly from the Developer.

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer

The application is free or paid for added features.

Q - Runtime: 4:01

A - Not a good sign. Normally the runtime would be between 2 - 3 minutes but longer when computer has low disk space

Q - No Time Machine backup - Time Machine backup not found.

A - Equivalent  to walking the Tight Rope without a Safety Net

A - If you have used or are using Time Machine Backup Utility  you maybe able to Restore the Deleted Files

For future purposes

3 Backups using 2 methods and 1 off site incase of natural disaster or un-natural disaster.

Each of the above should be done to a Dedicated Single Purposed External Drive

Q - Low disk space - This computer is running low on free hard drive space.

A - Answered earlier and later

 Q disk0 - APPLE SSD AP0256Q 251.00 GB (Solid State - TRIM: Yes)

 A - Size: 245.11 GB

 Free: 58.59 GB

 Available: 72.89 GB

A - From another contributor @etresoft regarding Free Space and Available Space

Free vs available disk space huge differe… - Apple Community

Quote >>  “ The "available" storage is the amount of used storage that the operating system could automatically delete if it felt that it was really necessary. The "free" storage is the amount that you can actually use for something.

There are system processes that run in the background and automatically delete some of the "available" storage and convert it to "free". If you completely run out of storage, then those system processes will try a little harder. When you "delete" files you are just hinting to the operating system that you don't need those files anymore. The operating system will eventually remove them, but on its own schedule.

Certain tools will allow you to force the issue and manually clean up some of this storage and manually delete local snapshots. But that is only temporary. "  << End Quote

1. I increased the available disk space

2. I performed a restart

3. I removed some applications

4. I disabled phone tracking

5. The computer was restarted

6. I attempted installation using First Aid

7. I used Recovery Mode for the disks

8. I tried installing using different Wi-Fi networks

9. I downloaded the installer to the disk and tried installing from there

Nothing helped — I still can’t install the update.

I’m sending a new report.

Apart from more Empty Space you have created on the drive

I see very little else that has changed except the addition of " 2025-06-04 git-2.33.0-intel-universal-mavericks (2.33.0) - Installer " which was not present in the first report

At this point, have the computer evaluated by the Professionals who have the Special Hardware Software and Expertise to diagnose the issue and offer possible solutions

Make an Appointment at the Apple Genius Bar or call 1 800 MyApple and have them evaluate the computer

“ I’ve noticed that during online meetings, my internet sometimes disconnects, lags, or freezes. “

To have a successful update it is a generally accepted practice.

The computer needs at least 50 GB of Free Free Space

As for Wifi issues in general

I would start here

None of which are beneficial to the computer and the Operating System

There are 4 Categories of Third Party Software / Services that are baffling.

Why some users insist on installing and using the below software.

Third Party 2 Way Firewalls

Commercial VPNs

Third Party Security Software

Third Party Disk Cleaners / Optimizer

Thank you VERY much for the information.

Regarding the available space on the hard drive – looking at it the way you showed in the screenshot, I currently have 51 GB free, and I can free up more if needed.

As for the programs – I don’t use any of the ones you mentioned. I haven’t installed any third-party firewalls, VPNs, or security software.

I mainly use the laptop for studying, taking notes, and attending online meetings.

I have installed a few external applications (like Visual Studio and Anki) – could one of those be causing the issue?

What can I do to scan the system and check whether the Wi-Fi issue is system-related or hardware-related?

OK, thanks for the information and your earlier attempts to help.

I switched to a MacBook after 15 years of using Windows, and my frustration level is through the roof. There are constant issues with this system — the disk is small, everything runs slowly, installing programs is restricted, and updating takes hours of troubleshooting.

I’m definitely going back to an Android phone and a Windows laptop.

You are welcome

In the 20+ years since switching from MS Windows to exclusively Apple Computers

The only real issues I have had, were in the early days

Most of the issues I experienced ( in hindsight) were Self Inflicted

The general rules of good computing, be it MS Windows or MacOS

Spend the extra money, up front, for a computer that has a large enough SSD Drive and RAM for the current needs and add in what you project your needs will be for the next 3 - 5 Years ( as best as you can )

Doing so will, generally Future-Proof the computer

As for Installation of Third Party Applications

I generally check out what the Applications Before adding them to the computer

Caveat Emptor = Buyer beware

As for switching back to Android and MS Windows

If you believe they are a better find - go for it

Though, a visit to the Genius Bar of Apple may just put this matter behind you 🤞

Well, yes — every system has its issues, and in 99% of cases, it’s the user’s fault.

But here I just feel powerless and I really don’t understand how this system works. I have to turn off tracking just to update the system, and I need to have half the disk space free for it to function properly.

From the perspective of a Windows user, this system just feels weak.

It’s true, I chose a computer with poor specs — my goal was simply to use Google Meet for meetings and take notes. I didn’t expect much more, and yet even those basic expectations turned out to be too much (for me / for the device).

I will go to an Apple store and ask for help as soon as I find a moment.

I’ll share the solution — maybe it will help someone else.

Thanks for the conversation and for clarifying a few things.
