Do I need a new Time Capsule?

Fellow and long-time Time Capsule and AirPort user here:

Time Capsules have been out of production for quite some time; I’m unsure if they even receive security updates against the ever-evolving router vulnerabilities. (although I seriously doubt it).

As good a product as it was … it might be time to seriously consider a replacement. (before the inevitable — and almost always poorly-timed — failure occurs; leaving you in a “lurch.”)

On what specific Time Capsule model we are talking about, and what kind of speed increase it is.

802.11n is not a model, its a type of Wi-Fi connection and its maximum Bandwidth tops out at a theoretical 600Mbps, though the actual bandwidth would in most cases be less than that.

If your speed increase keeps it under that bandwidth, then yes, the Time Capsule will continue to offer the entire speed of your internet connection.

If however, you get a newer 1Gbps internet for instance, then no, as the Time Capsule would then be capped below your speed increase.

Also, note that Apple discontinued the Time Capsules 7 years ago, so it's not a bad idea to start looking for a replacement router now anyway.

FYI ... the A1409 is a "4th generation" 802.11n Time Capsule. Also, you can expect the throughput performance, when operating as a router, to be around 400-450 Mbps ... so, if your new Internet service is above that, it will be "limited" by the TC.
